"Of course, it makes sense that descriptions of a husband and wife are placed side by side, but this overt motivation for the sentence does not fully explain the logic of the juxtaposition. The sentence places complexity and superficially together in a way that will be repeated throughout the novel. besides the two different characters who are linked by marriage, the paragraph suggests two lined modes of existence—and two registers of description reflect these modes. And the abrupt shift from Mr. Bennet’s depth to Mrs. Bennet’s shallowness implies some kind of interconnection, some logic if “relationship” which governs both these modes of existence, and out of which they both emerge"(52).

Through the book, Pride and
Prejudice wrote by Jane Austen, the story about the couple of Elisabeth and
Darcy experienced the characteristic of pride and prejudice and then eliminated
the misunderstandings to get together awakened the interests about humanity and
relationship. Besides this couple, I would like to discuss the relation between
Mr. and Mrs. Bennet shows the satire art in that period according the behaviors
and conversations in this novel.
The background of this story
is in the countryside of England around eighteen century. Although Mr. Bennet
was not wealthy, Bennet family was still famous in that village because Mr.
Bennet was a squire.
“Her father,
captivated by youth and beauty, and that appearance of good humour which youth
and beauty generally give, had married a woman whose weak understanding and
illiberal mind had very early in their marriage put an end to all real
affection for her. [...] But Mr. Bennet was not of a disposition to seek
comfort for the disappointment which his own imprudence had brought on, in any
of those pleasures which too often console the unfortunate for their folly of
their vice. He was fond of the country and of books; and from these tastes had
arisen his principal enjoyment”(8).
From the description about Mr. Bennet above, we got that Mr. Bennet made
an unwise decision when he was young. Although he had read much and
intelligent, he married a “good” wife that he had to spend most of time in his
room to seek comfort for the disappointment. The youth and beauty of Mrs.
Bennet captivated Mr. Bennet however; his wife “was a woman of mean
understanding, little information, and uncertain temper”. According to their
conversation, Mr. Bennet, as a hunsband feel the satire to Mrs. Bennet from Mr.
Bennet. Mr. Bennet always used “my dear” or “kitty” to call his wife when he
felt sick about his wife’s behaviors when she crazy on letting her daughter get
married. For example,
“Now, Kitty, you may cough as much as you chuse,”
said Mr. Bennet; and as he spoke, he left the room, fatigued with raptures if
his wife”(47).
This quote is from chapter two when she was excited that this young and
wealthy man had moved here and became new neighbor with Bennet family. However,
her Husband, Mr. Bennet did not agree to visit Bingley. Then, Mrs. Bennet cried
that she was sick about Mr. Bingley because she had no chance to introduce her
daughters to Mr. Bingley. She also satirized Mrs. Long was selfish and
hypocritical in front of her daughters because Mrs. Long could not back on time
at the assemblies. When Mr. Bennet told them that Mr. Bingley would visit their
house, Mrs. Bennet suddenly changed her sadness: “How good it was in you, my
dear Mr. Bennet.” Her hypocritical and moody made her husband sick. Therefore,
the quote I chose above was Mr. Bennet’s response. This sentence was full of
irony that he satirized his wife’s behaviors was rude and insincere. He could not bear his wife so that after this
word, he left the room. It was obvious that Mrs. Bennet did not feel his irony
that the rapture of her was focus on the chance to let her daughters get
married.
