“Mindedness is a necessary condition for self-representation and narration that it isn't surprising to find narratives where many forms of damaged mindedness are not serving neither as moral barometers or as invitations to pity or horror but as meditations on the possibility of narrative representation”(572).
“ ‘And she said, “Don’t worry. I’m not going to tell the police and I’m not going to tell your father, because there’s nothing wrong with having a chat. Having a chat is just being friendly, isn’t it.”(55)
The quote I chose was the second time Christopher met Mrs. Alexander. The first time he met Alex, he was vigilant with her because she was a stranger. He thought she entered the house was trying to call his father because he asked about the murder of the dead dog. He chose to leave. However, when he met Mr. Alex, it was during the Super Good Day. Therefore, he chose to chat with her. When he chatted with her, he was still thinking. He thought whether it was good to talk to a stranger or whether it is suitable to ask about the clue of the dead dog. He also thought how to ask is suitable that it did not break his promise with his father. His brain was thinking so fast that he could know how to continue the dialogue. Actually, for Mrs. Alex, she was an old lady living in a house. She has a grandson who has similar age with Christopher. She likes a lonely lady that she likes to talk to children. So she tried to find some food he likes. She tried to be friendly with him. She knew Christopher was a special but poor boy. She knew what happened to his mother therefore, she felt he was a poor child with the physical disease. She tried to persuade him that chatting is not a bad thing. Parents always told their children do not talk or play with a problem child. They always felt sick about them. Problem child became a special and dangerous object. However, they actually need people to stay with and care about them. It is not pity but a normal care. Caring could give them the courage to speak out their thoughts and feelings. Christopher needs the caring from his parents. His mother wanted to chase her amazing love because she was sick about face with her problem son. She could not bear it. She has no patient to stay with her son however his father always took care with his son. He tried to protect him and talk to him. Christopher’s teachers helped him to study as a normal student and tried to help to speak out his feelings. Thinking helps him for narrative.
